She had, at this point, exhausted all most all of her scant resources, but there must be something else, someone she could appeal to, or reach, or bribe… At last, sleep must have overtaken her, because she woke with a start to a knock on the door to announce the arrival of their breakfast. And maybe the gods did have it in them to offer her some small boon after all, because the maid that entered their room was not their usual one, the one who had betrayed them to Mysaria.

“If it is forgiveness you seek for killing my father, you will not find it here,” Alicent says over a scoff, over a nasty sound.
Her daughter sleeps behind her in a cot thin as parchment. Her father’s blood seems still beneath her nails though she has not touched him. The city outside groans under its new queen, Aegon has fled, Aemond has taken Harrenhal, and yet Rhaenyra stands in her stripped room, crownless and terrible, asking for judgment as though Alicent has any right to give it.
Perhaps she does; and perhaps that is the final cruelty.
tldr: the one where they slowly reshape the future of Rhaenyra’s reign, mend what has been broken, and rebuild their own family from the ruins. the slowest of burns, really.

A week later, Alicent received another raven. The note attached was small, and contained only a single line of familiar script.
I cannot forget, nor do I wish to.
After everything they had exchanged over the years—a youth of whispers and laughter, staggered conflict over decades, recent weeks of written correspondence—it only took eight words to thoroughly dismantle Alicent.
The note itself appeared no different than the ones before it, but there was no doubt this was the Rhaenyra she knew, and each word reverberated in the depths of Alicent’s bones, like a sept’s mournful echo.
