    Summary

It was cold. Not winter in Canada, but definitely the last days of fall. Ilya shivered, pulling the wool of his peacoat tighter, not that it made much difference. A leaf fell, almost onto his head, as he kept walking. Ilya felt his phone in his pocket. It was warm from holding onto it, but he kept it turned off. Shane was at the gym and he'd be home soon. To notice that Ilya wasn't there. He'd call him. But no answer. Not right now.

    ~

Ilya goes for a walk in the forest, trying not to think about his mama's birthday and that he's one year older than she ever got to be. He doesn't want to think or feel. Ilya turns his phone off and is lost in the woods. Shane desperately tries to find him again.

    Summary

“Shane,” Ilya says miserably, hoping that his voicemail does not pick up on the fact that Ilya is largely speaking into the toilet bowl. “I don’t think I can meet you before the game. LeClaire has us in tape review from hotel arrival straight until curfew.” What he cannot tell his boyfriend is that he feels like absolute horseshit, because most of the team is run down and exhausted, and he would rather fucking die than give Montreal insider information. “I will see you after we win. Okay. Love you. Bye bye.”

Ilya has never felt so exhausted in his life. His muscles are in perpetual agony, heavy and clumsy and uncooperative and painful even doing the most benign tasks. The nausea is new, but he’s willing to bet it’s just a product of his overtired body throwing any emergency switch it can find than an actual illness.

    Summary

There’s still a big part of him that wants all the same things he used to. The hockey, those other interests, the simplicity of the smaller circle. But there’s a twinge of something else now beside it when he considers it for too long, a bruise he can’t place the origins of. He’d been able to put somewhat of a name to it, after Rose.

He only wishes he hadn’t filled in the rest of the blanks staring down at a grainy photograph of Svetlana Vetrova in a convenience store parking lot in Boston, a bag hanging off of her manicured finger just transparent enough to make out the logo of a First Response as she’d ducked into a sleek, black sports car, driving away with Shane's best worst would-have-been and, presumably, Ilya Rozanov's baby.

Shane feels no particular way about this turn of events. He really, honestly, mostly is somewhat close to believing that, too. It's progress.

    Summary

Scott's voice trails off as someone stumbling on the side of the road catches his attention. It’s a pale, omega teenager, with dead eyes, bruises covering his skin in mottled patches, his hair is tangled and greasy, and covered in blood that seemingly has no origin.
“Uh, sorry… I need to go. Kip, I think, shit. I’ll just call you or text you. Love you.” He doesn’t wait to hear his husband’s response before he hangs up and rushes out of the car.

    OR

12-year-old Ilya Rozanov was sold after presenting as an omega the day after his mother’s death. 2 years later, he escapes from his abusive alpha and finds himself wandering the streets of Ottawa when he’s rescued by Scott Hunter. Out of fear he accidentally creates a parental bond with Scott, turning the alpha into his new guardian.

Now he gets to live a life never thought was possible. He’s in a home with parents who somehow love him even at his worst, and he’s in therapy learning how to cope with his traumas. Scott introduces him back into hockey, he has teammates and friends, and maybe something more with the Centaurs captain, Shane Hollander.

Ilya just hopes this is a life he’s allowed to have. And hope is a dangerous thing.
