It has been several days since Gavin, a hunter he had grown accustomed to, cut off his partnership with his brother. He had thought the whole argument had been ridiculous, and the severing of Gavin's help had been a rather crushing drawback to their research. He had planned to find him and talk, but one single thing throws that plan into disarray.
Gavin hasn't been seen in several days.

Anderson dropped his sheriff title directly into Gavin's lap and headed out with the two. Temporarily, he had said.
Which, despite wanting the job for years, Gavin hadn't been too happy about. He should have been excited, unaware of the full weight of the responsibility, but all it felt like at the time was dread. But he was tired of running, so he figured to stick his heels in the dirt and try to do the job with his head held high like he originally planned.
Now, sitting on the back of his own horse with a noose around his neck, he figures he just wasn't cut out for this life.
Or maybe he wasn't really cut out for life in the first place.

Summary
A while back, after realizing Gavin's crush on one of the SWAT captains (and how distracted he is from fantasizing about them), Nines offered Gavin the option of becoming friends with benefits on the pretense of "easing each other's issues".
It knows that the title doesn't fit them anymore, that the detective's crush has moved away from the captain and onto him, but its been more than annoying to try and subtly pressure the man to admit it himself.
Luckily for Nines, the detective appears to be the most honest when in someone's bed.
