“Joel,” Ellie imagined her uncle tearing her father away from where he thought she was. “Joel, we need to run-”
“No,” Joel croaked.
“We will come back. We will find her, but right now we need to run.”
Ellie’s face fell. She listened to her father’s and uncle’s footsteps grow further and further until they faded completely. They left me, her shallow breaths worsened into stifled gasps for air. She grasped for her inhaler out of instinct.
Ellie sat, suffocating over and over for hours.
Her dad and her uncle didn’t come back. Or at least they never found her.
After two days, it rained, and she was able to slip out.
She emerged from her little cage, alone, and immediately wanted to go back in.
TLDR// Ellie is Joel’s toddler, until he loses her. He spends ten years sitting in his grief. She learns how to survive, until they find each other again.
