Summary
Dean should have known all those months ago.
Maybe some part of him should have known that it would end this way from the beginning.
That's the thing about crashes though.
As much as it feels like they're instantaneous, it takes a long time for you to build up to it.
It starts when you get in the car.
It starts when the rain begins to pour and slick up the road.
It starts when you press on the accelerator hard and don’t let up.
And later you look back and you want to scream 'Hit the Brakes!', But it's never that easy.
Car crashes are more than just a moment. They're a fatal attraction. It’s a force pulling you and something else together faster and faster till something has to give.
It's an inevitability.

AKA - Dean finds out something he really shouldn't have, makes some decisions that make a lot of people unhappy, goes on a road trip, and does what he's always done best. Saving people, killing things.

“Sit,” said Cas. Clipped and firm. The kind of tone you’d use on a dog who’d been causing trouble.
Sam got ready to open his mouth and say how ridiculous Cas was to think his brother would ever obey a command, even a simple one.
But Sam’s mouth remained open. Dean instantly slumped to his knees, then carefully crossed his legs neatly under himself. Without breaking eye contact. Dean was now looking up at the angel. He blinked slowly, his eyes wide and bright and gleaming.

Summary
Dean's never had faith. That's always been Sammy. But he thinks if there were ever a time for divine intervention, it would be now. Gazing up at the few stars that aren't occluded by the haze and light pollution, he feels fucking stupid when he opens his mouth to speak.
"God, if you're out there," he says, "I don't know what to do. I... I don't have anybody left. I need some help. God, man, just give me a sign."
Closing his eyes, he sits there. He can hear far off sounds of traffic and the whistle of the wind, but not much else. He thinks he catches a distant fluttering of wings, but there's no reply. Not that he really expected one.
(S1/S2 Rewrite) After Sam refuses to help Dean find their father, Dean prays for guidance. He doesn't expect to find it in an awkward, amnesiac angel, but at least he's easy on the eyes.
