Summary
The existence of Azkaban and the Dementors guarding it was so ingrained in the wizarding consciousness that no one gave a second thought to one thing. Where were the criminals before the takeover of Azkaban? Who had previously served as guardians of those who should not live freely among other wizards?
The answer was almost literally buried, but not entirely forgotten either.
In the place where the Ministry of Magic now stands, there was a prison created back when Britain was merely a colony of the Roman Empire. And the guards of this prison were wizards called Hellhounds—immortal, devoid of scruples and magical limits.
One of the twenty-one Hellhounds was Tobias, who later took the surname Snape.
The same Tobias Snape who, holding in his hands copies of the challenge his son had issued to Fleamont Potter, finally decided to fulfil his parental duty and engage in a duel to the death with the father of the boy who had tormented Severus and his friends.
