    He was expendable, because he had to be, and they had spent him on one last roll of an unthinkable chance. Whatever the outcome was, there wasn't supposed to be an *afterwards*.

    It turns out that afterwards has problems all of its own. There's an impossible wound torn into space, leaking the dying entropy of a broken universe; bloodwork nightmares are pouring out of the Hail Mary's walls, wreathed in the ghostlight of half-spoken guilt; and something that turns physics into fever dream is stirring just behind that failing veil.

    Ryland Grace is having a midlife crisis on the shoulders of giants. Simon absolutely, definitely should not be alive, let alone *here*. Rocky doesn't even have cultural touchstones for any of this.

    But they may be the only ones who can do anything about it.

    Grace couldn't believe it when a beetle arrived to Erid. A new crew of Eridians had been sent out on a new ship, the Blip-B, on a mission to save the three stars of the Alpha Centauri star system. It was supposed to be the first mission of many to help out neighboring stars.

    But, reports had come back on the beetle. Reports of a moon in the system, covered with a thick viscous liquid with a creature resembling a human floating on the surface of the ocean. The report stated the Blip-B's crew had rescued the human and had effectively terminated the mission, racing through the system to get this human to Erid. To Grace.

    The thing is, Grace knows the moon the crew reports does not exist. The Hail Mary's own scans of the journey through the system showed nothing even similar to the stray moon. And who they bring back isn't exactly human.

     Or

    Simon is turning into a monster on a strange planet and every day he strays further from who he was before.

    "There’s something out there.

    It shouldn’t be possible, but my eyes aren’t lying to me right now. I don’t think, anyways.

    There’s an actual Blip-freaking-D right out there. Floating in space. Menacingly.

    Mary isn’t glitching. I feel like I might be sick."

    OR

    En route to Erid, the Hail Mary picks up a signal from an unknown object. It turns out to be a ship– an impossibly HUMAN ship, nearly 12 light-years away from anywhere that might make sense. Curiosity kills the cat, Grace and Rocky get a little bit more than they bargained for, and the Hail Mary might just have a new crewmate.

    If he lives, that is.

    Ryland Grace is slowly dying of malnourishment. His body needs carbohydrates and fiber, something the Eridians can’t synthesize. The problem is, all the plants aboard the Hail Mary died long before he ever set foot on Erid.

    But Adrian finds a liquid-covered moon in an astrophage(?)-ravaged solar system and the odd tree that sprouts from its surface brings hope.

    Then they find the human, and he's hungry too.

    Grace/simon project hail Mary, iron lung.

    Grace made it to Erid, but the plants and food didn't. He's dying and he knows it.

    The Erids with Grace in tow bring him to a planet in an attempt to harvest plant life to save him but this planet is.. wrong.

    The space around it is empty. No stars, no planets, no debris. It organically pulses with the mimicry of an s.o.s, it's flesh and blood coats the surface. A tree of bone and odd fruit, an impossible amount of human corpses lay underground at its roots and there's a dying man being forced to live merged into its hellish bark.

    Humans never made it past a few lightyears from their home planet. He should be the only one.

    he isn't.

    “The thing is, I like him. And not even just because he’s the only human for 12 light-years. I think I’d like him even if we’d met on Earth, like on Stratt’s Vat. Or if we’d been coworkers at Grover Cleveland Middle. Simon is a good person. I like him.

    We’re…something. We’re something more than something, we kind of have to be because of the whole only-humans thing. And the whole saved-from-the-void-of-space thing. But it feels kind of like the way that Rocky and I are more than something, only different.

    And that’s the part that scares me.”

    About a year into the journey to Erid, a rescue mission brought another human onto the Hail Mary. Nearly three months later, he’s finally adjusted well enough to accept his new reality.

    Grace kinda wants to do something about it. Unfortunately and above all else, Doctor Captain Ryland Grace is, and has always been, a fudging coward.
