Here is what he cannot understand: Tidepeak is nearly impenetrable. The magical wards alone had taken decades to perfect, and they have been perfected. To say nothing of the way he's altered the tower's physicality—Master Ikithon himself had taken a full five minutes to break down the door, to hear Wensforth tell it, and he's considered having that information mounted on a plaque in his study.
Even were some powerful being to breach his sanctum, an alarm would sound in Yussa's head the moment the first of the wards snapped, increasing in intensity with each subsequent spell sundered. He would know of an intruder before they even managed to intrude.
Not the faintest bell of warning has sounded in his head. Not a single ward has fallen, not a single window breached.
"Mow," says the trespasser, and he has no rebuttal.

He leaves him an opening to back down, a talking point to change. This one Essek doesn’t have to guess, Caleb told him that a myriad of times – with me, you do not need to do what you do not want – the statement echoes in his head, and he knows that’s true.
And yet, it would be anything but fair.
“I never told you what happened to my mother,” the words come out of his mouth, but they don’t feel his; he doesn’t want them to feel his.
“I never asked.”
He never did, as courteous as he is, as kind and thoughtful.
“Perhaps I want you to.”As Caleb learns to let go, Essek desperately tries to forget.

Summary
It is still cold, and will probably get a little bit colder through the night. It is awkward, but… from a logical standpoint… he might be used to roughing it but Essek– no matter what he says– is not. So he worries.
“Um, this might be a bit… forward,” he says shortly, “but… if we were to sleep close together, it would help us keep warm throughout the night, too.”
Essek’s hands pause in smoothing his bedding.
