Having lived in the middle of nowhere by herself for over two years by that point, the new neighbor was a surprise.
When a stranger "moves in" to the house across the field, Veri finds herself unable to oust the squatter on her property. Maybe it was the quiet way her new 'neighbor' listened so keenly when she talked. Maybe it was the loneliness she saw in her eyes, reflected back at herself when she looked in the mirror.
