In other words, on a random day sometime after the fourth shinobi war, Kakashi’s brain finally catches up: the village is safe, and he doesn’t need to be a tool of war anymore. A few more realizations ensue.

After multiple unsuccessful attempts to get him to be interested in anyone, Shikamaru thinks the strategy is a failure. The fact that Sakura sticks around after is not related.
