    Summary

In the year 1822, Mister Colin Bridgerton makes a grand return to England after almost 7 years of self imposed exile and reconnects with his estranged friend, Penelope. Will he be able to break the walls she keeps building between them and mend the bridges she is intent on destroying?

“What’s stopping you from living your life then, Pen? You’re living alone, aren’t you? No mother watching over your shoulder. No husband dictating your choices…”

“I mean, I can live alone, yes, but I’m still tethered. To reputation. To expectations. To the knowledge that no matter how independently I breathe, I will always be the subject of whispered pity or amusement. A woman alone is never just alone—she is sad, or defiant, or pitiful… never simply herself.”

“Come with me. For a month or two. See the world outside Mayfair parlours and boring soirees. You said you wanted to feel free. Let this be that.”

“But how? Where would we stay? What would people say, Colin? I’m not naïve—I know how this would look. Who would even accompany me as a chaperone?”

“Spinsters do not need chaperones, Pen. You said it yourself once.”

    Summary

“The columnist who writes the Love and Sex column has had a medical emergency,” Penelope explains as she takes a fortifying sip of wine. “They want me to take over writing the column for her for an indefinite amount of time while she recovers.”
Francesca gives Penelope an appraising look. “You’re nervous about this? Why?”
“I suppose it’s two things,” Penelope says, looking into the middle distance between her friends. “First, it’s a lot of work.”
“You’ve never been afraid of hard work, Pen,” Eloise offers.
“Thank you, but second, and probably more importantly, I don’t think I have the requisite experience to do it well.”
“Why? You’re a great writer,” Colin says from the corner where he’s been uncharacteristically quiet all night.
Penelope feels herself flame red. “It’s not my writing that’s the issue.”
    --
Or Penelope is given a work assignment to author a popular Sex Advice column but doesn’t feel she has had enough “experience” to do it well. Colin offers to “help.”

    Summary

“There’s ‘an offer’?” he asked, sarcasm dripping off his tongue.

“There is.” And that was when – simply, seriously, without an ounce of hesitation, in broad daylight, under the eyes of God – Penelope Featherington leaned ever so slightly into Colin's space and said, “Sleep with me and I’ll convince my mom to get you the internship at The Times.”

There was only so much disbelief a person could weave into a single sentence. Colin used it all.

“You’re bribing me to sleep with you for revenge on your ex-boyfriend?”
