    The first time Cliff saw Rozy and Hollander interact was at a team-building event before practice started the next week. Cliff had introduced himself and Hollander to Rozy, but judging by Rozy's shark-like grin and Hollander's scathing glare, they had met already. The pair spent the entire evening running their mouths, trading worse and worse barbs as the night went on, spitting and snarling in English, French, and Russian indiscriminately, culminating in Hollander nearly taking a swing at Rozy. Cliff finally separated them (“take a fucking walk, Rozanov, I don't care whose fault it was, fuck!”), and mourned Boston's chances at the Cup with half a bottle of shitty Jack Daniel's later that night. So much for a cohesive team.

    Or: Cliff hasn't known a minute of peace since Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov both joined the Boston Bears. This problem resolves itself in an unexpected way.

    Ilya knows that no one loves the same version of a person; his Shane is different to Yuna’s Shane, who is different to David’s Shane, who is different to J.J., or Rose, or Hayden’s Shane. And while Ilya knows he’d fall in love with every single version, he’s happy he gets this one. Happy he gets the Shane who lets himself be trusting, and vulnerable, and honest.

    It makes Ilya wish he could have loved Shane earlier - makes him wish he could have known him longer. But he’s just glad he gets to do it now, here, like this.

     

    (Or, four times people are surprised by Shane’s clinginess, and one time they completely expect it.)

    Ilya was exaggerating for comic effect, of course. He wasn’t in love with Shane Hollander. He was just absolutely infatuated with him and wanted to carry him around in his pocket and also fuck him senseless and then count his freckles while he slept beside him. So not love, just whatever that was, but still. It was a problem.

    Or,
    A newly-drafted Ilya Rozanov finds himself transfixed by a beautiful man in the grocery store.

    A newly-single Shane Hollander does something uncharacteristically brave.

    Neither of them are prepared for just how out of their depth they're about to be.
