Looking back, everything began to crumble the moment his lips left hers.
Stepping away from him, her whole world tipped on edge and then tumbled like muffins out of the pan.
“Tag,” he had whispered, shaken, broken, in a way that seized her whole heart.
Stumbling promises began spilling from his mouth - Angel, I’ll do anything, whatever you want and I’ve never felt -
It should have been the moment - the fairy tale, the answer to all this painful longing, the blasted distance, the wild bravery it took to let the words break free from her heart. In her mind she saw them riding off together on Rocky, the warm Aga and dirty laundry left behind, as he lifted her and carried her over the threshold of his manor, lonely no more.
Instead, Charles had stumbled into the kitchen looking for more wine, and their bodies pushed away from each other as if burned.

She gave him a once-over. He was far too polished for her liking—like someone who color-coordinated his socks with his ties. The tailored cut of his suit, the carefully disheveled head of dark hair... it all screamed effort. She could practically smell the cologne wafting off him, some expensive blend that probably had a pretentious name like Triumph or Arrogance. If she had known this was who her father had asked to bring her to the wedding, she would’ve hitchhiked instead.
“Daddy sent you?” she asked, her disbelief seeping into her voice.
He slipped the catalog into his pocket and straightened his shoulders, exuding a calm, practiced authority. He had the audacity to look bored, if not somewhat incredulous. “Daddy?” he teased, but quickly noticed her look remained quite serious. “Right…apparently. Your Daddy is rather headstrong and I owed him a favor for not blasting me across Venturer for one of my recent escapades, so…”
“Great,” she muttered. “My knight in shining armor.”
