So maybe he needs to question some things from time to time. It’s okay. Just some self issues here. Nothing to worry about.

"I've missed this," Wu murmurs against him, the words ghosting across Mako's skin. "Missed just being with you." He raises himself up onto one elbow, hovering over Mako and scanning his face like he wants to freeze the clock between one second and the next and commit every last detail to memory. One of his eyes shines like a jewel in the silvery light of the moon while his once carefully coiffed curls—made a ruin by Mako's roving hands—hang in a loose, shimmering wave over his forehead and cast the other into deep shadow.
It knocks the breath from Mako's lungs, and for a moment he can only stare back. In his mind's eye he watches every version of Wu he'd known and loved—and those he'd yet to meet—converge at a single fixed point above him, into a man not quite old but no longer young, and just as beautiful as he'd been the day he'd flounced his way into Mako's world like it belonged to him, too.

Summary
Not only had he brought Rapunzel back, but he’d saved her life. A heroic feat, and one completely unbefitting of him. Eugene wasn’t sure he was even capable of growing into those footsteps he’d set for himself, no matter how much time he’d be given. A lifetime worth of growth wouldn’t shape him into a person worthy of consideration.
“Is that so?” asked the Queen, though instead of cutting through the tension, it only added to it. A million expectations, dozens of other accomplishments that would be attributed to him by association. He’d saved a life, had traded his own for that of the Princess, and would now have to answer to her parents. And they would find out that it was a one time thing, that he hadn’t done it because he valued her status as royalty but because he’d found something worth living for in her, because he’d realised that the world needed more people like her, and no matter what he said, it wouldn’t land. He didn’t have the grace to wrap it up nicely; whatever he could think of would be dropped at their feet, clumsy like a boy.

Or: For the first time in a long time, Eugene feels completely out of his depth. He deals with it the same way he’s dealt with all things, until now.

Everyone knows about the Six Traitors’ Dynasty, now. It’s a requirement for passing your basic history exam, and you want to do that—because it’s one of the easy ones. It’s not like math or philosophy, fuck. But how do you create legends? And what’s in between the pages of the glorious battles, of bringing titans to their knees, broken and begging?
What about the time that Poseidon threw an eel after Hestia, or when she answered back with a beehive full of fury. How about Zeus teaching Hera and Demeter how to embroider flowers onto their clothes? How about Aidoneus and Zeus teaming up to get back at the resident lord of pranks, their brother dearest and managing to rope Demeter into it after Poseidon manages to nail her with a bucket of fish heads?
These are those stories. A little cute, a little gut-wrenching, a lot messy.
