Summary
Jesper says it must be blackmail. Maybe murder. There’s no other way Kaz Brekker could already be holding a full professorship at the University of Ketterdam, no matter how many books he’s written. Inej, trapped by an adjunct’s contract which is the only thing standing between her and deportation, is willing to risk the obvious dangers of his company in exchange for the advantages, professional and otherwise. But when the department’s budget comes up suspiciously short, Inej’s job is on the line, and Kaz isn’t ready to let her go without a fight.

Summary
Every night, The Crow opens its doors on Commerce St, and the patrons come to break the law — laws against gambling, laws against indecency, laws protecting the public order. If the police decide to raid, they can shut down the bar, but they can do much worse to patrons caught wearing the wrong clothes or dancing with the wrong people. So every night, Inej walks the maze of the West Village, and watches for the cops. And she thinks about Kaz.

Summary
He points angrily to the badge embroidered on his chest. “I’m with the Fire Department!”
“Okay, and? Is there a fucking fire?”
“There’s an open hydrant,” Ben says, gesturing with the wrench again. Apparently the little fucks think that’s funny too.
“There’s been an open hydrant all morning,” the girl says, around a dripping spoonful of bright-orange helado. “So why’s it an emergency now?”
Ben's come to close an open hydrant. The kids playing in it don't want him to, and a pretty girl on the street is backing them up. [Originally written for twitter.]

Someone asked for this. Literally, at least one person requested each of these drabbles. (Whether they were satisfied or not is another question.) And then someone suggested I rope in my tumblr strays on AO3, so here we are.

Summary
As New York City takes to the streets to demand justice for its people, protesters are being struck down by a new and dangerous kind of teargas. Activists are searching for information to help them treat the injured and protect themselves.
Rey's in the streets as a volunteer medic, and she's seen the gas at work. She knows all about biochemistry, but she doesn't have access to the First Order labs that made the gas. Ben, in-house counsel for FO, can get access but doesn't know shit about biochem. Plus he tends to waver a little bit on the whole "doing the right thing" thing. They have to find a way to get together.
Ben, impulsively, decides to pass her off as his girlfriend. Without asking Rey first.

Summary
Kaz and Inej crisscross state lines, organizing workers into unions. Sometimes they win. Sometimes they lose. And one time, on a cold night in Pittsburgh, they lie together in a very small bed, and they talk. And more than talk.
Our lives shall not be sweated, from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses! -

Summary
In the depths of his cycle, Ketterdam says, Kaz Brekker is the worst kind of monster, a koper who kills any ankopje he gets his hands on. All Inej knows for sure is that he disappears completely every six months. But now, in the confined space of the boat back from Fjerda, with Van Eck's thirty million waiting for them, their cycles have fallen into sync, and Inej is in danger of finding out just how true the rumors really are.

Of course Rey hates her day job. But she didn't ask for this night shift, either: an unpaid gig fighting the forces of evil with pointy wooden sticks. She doesn't want to risk her life fighting vampires; she wants a living wage and health insurance and her parents back. She's old, to be a Slayer, and she's nobody, and New York doesn't even have a Hellmouth.
Yet.

Summary
There always seems to be one last job he needs her for. The jobs, according to Jesper, are "unnecessary" and “really transparent excuses to see Inej again.” But this one isn’t. Obviously. And he’ll prove it. By being brusque and cold and businesslike.
Inej does not want brusque and cold and businesslike. She wants, at least, a proper goodbye. And, Kaz discovers, she didn't sail back to Ketterdam in a filthy, humid summer to not get what she wants.

Summary
Her black boot lashes out, the heavy heel against his shoulder, throwing him on his back in the dirt. "Show me your heart, Jedi.” But it’s not his heart she’s looking at as she stands over him. Her weapon is deactivated and fastened to her belt in one gesture; without its red blaze she looks more human. Younger. But there’s a lurid glow in her gaze as she rakes his bare chest with her eyes and lingers appraisingly on the point of his humiliation, his loss of self-control.

Summary
The play Rey is trying to direct is dark -- violent and sexually explicit. Ben is a non-union actor with no resume to speak of, but she's taken a chance and cast him as the male lead. That's not going to work if he keeps mumbling all his nastier lines to his shoes.
Rey's going to have to do some intensive work to get the performance she wants from him.
