Bookmarker's Notes
Chuck turned so that his brown eyes met blue ones. “Once upon a time, Bryce Larkin was my best friend. Actually, he was my roommate in college. Then he did something that I could never wrap my head around and I thought he ruined my life.”
“So, you have a vendetta to settle?” the dark haired man asked.
“No, not really,” Chuck admitted. “I would just like to know why he did what he did. The not knowing is the hard part. And as for ruining my life, I shouldn’t dump all that on him. Maybe that’s on me because I used it as an excuse not to move forward. Maybe it’s become a pattern for me to stay where it’s safe and not take chances.”
-----
“Now let me give you a heads up, as well, Buddy. I know you don’t believe in clairvoyance, but just be careful around somebody named ‘Peter Burke.’ He may not have your best interests at heart.”

Ga On thought he was ready to meet Judge Kang Yo Han — and he was terribly wrong about that.
OR: This is a complete rewrite of the canon with a lot of new scenes and canonical power balance in the characters' relationships, but in a completely new way (thanks to omegaverse).

Bookmarker's Notes
"She gave him a loft in her ritzy mansion, and she gave him the well-being of acceptance and the knowledge that he had nothing to fear from her. In return, that blaze of exuberant life force rescued her from her melancholy, and made her feel young and vital and valued again."

Summary
"What, aren't you going to invite me in for coffee? I'm early."
A little, quiet laugh. "The suit is asking why I didn't invite him inside? You should know your criminals better than that, Agent." The door shuts behind him. Caffrey begins to walk down the hallway, but Peter stays where he is.
"Should I be concerned, then?" He's expectant, unimpressed. Like a teacher asking a student to hand over their phone for having it out in class, he thinks wryly. After all, he did get up earlier this morning with the expectation of being invited inside. He'd like a quality shot of caffeine, true, but more than that, he needs to make sure his consultant isn't plotting anything where he thinks Peter can't see. It is in the criminal mindset to use every weak point and loophole in a given situation to their benefit.
(For the most part, Peter Burke represents the best of all FBI agents: he follows the rules, he catches bad guys, and he keeps his CI on a tight leash. Dick Grayson and Neal Caffrey are having a hard time coexisting, but the mission always comes first.
Well, you know what they say about Rome: it wasn't built in a day, but it burned in one.)

Bookmarker's Notes
It makes him more aware of just how much energy he’d been dedicating to keeping Burke happy. No wonder Neal almost had a mental breakdown every time Burke showed him a modicum of disapproval.
"The main point of my report is to strongly suggest that Agent Burke not be given responsibility over CIs or inexperienced agents in the future – his expectations are too high and he's too indelicate to have people depending on him."
"The coffee Neal buys Peter on 'Neal's Last Thursday', remaining untouched and unappreciated as Peter rushes through life, is a metaphor for the ways that abuse victims accomodate and support their abusers in order to avoid being further traumatized meanwhile the abuse is so ordinary to abusers that they don't even register either the accommodations or the abuse itself as particularly."

Bookmarker's Notes
The Peter Burke Neal sees is an older dream even than Kate, a fantasy painted by his mother when he was six years old; Neal looks at Peter and sees the man he used to think his father was.
“You think I don’t know what he wants? This is like watching him chase after Kate all over again. He’s taking stupid risks, suit. And I’m tired of watching him tear himself apart trying to be good enough for you people to take him back. It’s never going to happen.”
“Let him go.”
“I’m saying stop giving him false hope.”

Summary
“If this is the way Queen Victoria treats her prisoners, she doesn’t deserve to have any.”
~ Oscar WildeJason is rather disturbed by seeing how run down Dick is from his cushy undercover gig at the FBI. But since Dick would be sad if he tried to solve this problem with violence, he tries words. And logic. (Washed down with some of Dick's good wine.)
Okay, and a bit of intimation.

Bookmarker's Notes
"Ah. You see yourself as a ‘good guy’ against ‘bad guys’. How fucking exhausting it must be to still think like you’re a child, or a blood-less paragon hero. Is that’s why you set the bar at one level, and then move the fucking goal posts so he can never fit your arbitrary level of ‘not criminal’ enough? Once a criminal, always a criminal, yeah?"
"And how the fuck does he prove that negative? When would you say that he’s no longer a criminal? Definitively, I mean. A record of good behaviour, stamped by you? One year of penance for every crime you can’t prove he did? You only got him on bond forgery and a prison break. You never even managed to prove he’s anything more than a forger."
"Your close rate looks a lot less appealing to the higher ups if we make it into a ratio. He escaped you for three years. You caught him once after three years. I’m pretty sure Neal wins, if we’re taking quantitive measurements."

Bookmarker's Notes
But it was Peter, not Neal, who’d been living in a fantasy. One where hard work is rewarded, evil caught and punished, and we all, eventually, get what we deserve.
“I didn’t take him in as a rehabilitation project,” she says at last. “I took Neal into my home, and my heart, for who he was. Not for who I thought he could become.”
