Mello slammed the door shut and the whole room felt the impact. One of the framed pictures above his bed ended up crooked and a book fell over on the side table next to the bed. The door was closed already, but Mello kicked it again for good measure. Then he dropped his keys on the bedside table.
At best, it had been a crappy day.
At worst, he was going to do something he'd regret sooner or later.
The test results had just come back- he'd spent the last month on nothing but studying and yet, as always, he was still only second place. He was angry. God, no, actually- anger was an understatement. He was furious.

Sometimes Mello dreams of hell.
Flames lick his skin. Smoke fills his lungs. Searing heat, blistering pain, body and brain deprived of oxygen. In the dream, he knows it’s hell because he knows that’s where he belongs, but it looks and feels just like the memory of that burning church.
Most nights he sleeps alone. Wakes up sweating, sometimes screaming. It used to be that he always slept alone, but since the end of January he has been weak. Prone to mistakes. On the nights he drifts off next to Near, he wakes to the back of Near’s cool hand on his face and Near’s steady gaze slicing into him. It cuts straight to the bone.
