Shane didn’t know when it changed, but at some point, he found himself looking at men. But he kept it to himself, tried not to think about it.
He couldn’t be gay. Professional hockey players aren’t allowed to be gay. It didn’t matter that he’d been hooking up with Ilya Rozanov for years. That meant nothing.
Then Jessie Pike came along. And fuck did he mess everything up. Jessie was Hayden’s younger brother, and Jessie was gay.
When Rozanov sees pictures of Jessie and Shane together, his jealousy gets the best of him, and he starts poking at Shane. But maybe Jessie was the wake up call they both needed to finally figure things out and admit their feelings for each other.
And for Shane to come out to Hayden.
And for Hayden to catch them together and flip out. Because Hayden despises Ilya Rozanov. And in his mind, so does Shane.

Summary
Hayden regretted every decision he’d ever made that ultimately brought him to this moment. Somehow, he ended up in a random hotel room in New York, playing therapist to his best friend Shane, and the biggest asshole in the entire NHL, Ilya Rozanov, who he just found out had been sleeping with Shane for literally years.
This was not how he had planned to spend his evening. Or spend any evening for that matter.
He didn’t really see any other choice at the moment though, after Shane had been a complete disaster for the past two weeks and playing like shit, and Rozanov had shown up at their hotel demanding to see Shane, and threatening to make a scene.
So his only option was to try to get these two idiots to talk to each other. About their feelings. Cause that was going to go well.
Or… After weeks of Shane being completely unbearably grumpy following a game in Boston, Hayden made the mistake of answering Shane’s phone when Lily called. It was all downhill rom there.

When Troy Barrett first mentioned to Ilya that he and Harris had to disclose their relationship to the team management, Ilya couldn’t understand why it would matter. “The team has policies about this stuff, they don’t want to get sued or anyone to think I’m getting special treatment.” Troy tried to explain. “Everyone is ok with it, but we just needed to tell them.”
When the team had to complete mandatory anti-harassment and discrimination training a few weeks later, the topic came up again. Any personal relationship that may be perceived as a conflict of interest must be disclosed to management.
“Do I need to tell them?” He asked Shane that night. “I know we play for different teams, but I don’t know…”
Or… Ilya and Shane each tell their coaches that they are in a relationship with another player. The two conversations go *very* differently, and Shane is forced to deal with the consequences. But he doesn’t do it alone.

On the drive home from Shane’s parents house, Ilya got quiet. It had been a long afternoon, starting with Shane’s dad catching them kissing at the cottage. Even though they ultimately seemed to take it well, it had still been stressful. Shane could tell Ilya was emotionally drained, but it was more than that. Something else was wearing on him.
When Ilya admitted later that he was scared of getting caught, scared of getting outed, and scared of everything that could go wrong if they were.
Shane had the perfect solution - get married. If they did, Sane could protect him. He could make sure he never had to go back to Russia and make sure he could life the life he wanted and deserved.
Or… Ilya panics after getting caught by Shane’s parents. Shane offers the perfect solution.

When hockey fans take to social media to request a 24 Hour Handcuff Challenge with Ilya Rozanov and Hayden Pike, a bewildered Harris Drover reluctantly reaches out to the social media manager for the Montreal Voyageurs, Oscar Young, to make it happen. Oscar proposes they make the challenge a little more interesting with the addition of escape rooms, and despite initial reservations, Harris enthusiastically agrees.
It turns out Harris's idea of what constitutes an escape room is very different from Oscar's.
