“You really think out of the two of us, Arisu, that I should be the one to survive?”
Ryohei could only nod silently, eyes still caught on Chota’s dead body in front of him, the red pooling across the floor.
“—No, Arisu. Look at me, at Chota. Shibuki. These games…they made monsters out of us, animals…But you…I’ve seen you the past few games. I saw something in your eyes…the same thing I could feel watching me whenever we walk into a game. Something twisted. Hungry. It’s why I turned on you so quickly, Arisu. I’m sorry.”
“Karube—”
“—but that something could be the key to finally taking those psychopaths down.”
Ryohei stared at his friend, at his bitter smile.
“Beat them at their own game, Arisu. Show them who the real monster is.”
Or Arisu Ryohei, much like his namesake, found himself lost in a world so much more different and darker than his own. Unlike little Alice, however, he doesn’t think he’ll be escaping this hell.
Not without losing himself along the way.

Summary
Arisu hadn't stepped foot in a jaeger in five years. Not since he was nineteen and naive, and thought he was invincible.
Not since Alaska.
But a lot had happened since then. Resources were scarce, and the world was loosing badly in it's war against the kaiju. Living pilots who knew how to fight with old model mechs were in short supply. Unfortunately, Arisu was one of them, and there was a jaeger waiting that might as well have had his name on it.
He only had to find the other pilot.

Summary
After Chishiya's (mis)calculated betrayal at the beach, the surviving five are forced to run from the King of Spades' machine gun fire. A confusing dream plagues Arisu. Chishiya learns about what it means to care. Meticulous strategy has the group split down the middle, and Arisu is left making sense of not only the Borderlands’ puzzles, but also Chishiya's sly smiles and strange looks. A few snide remarks and a couple close calls later, the pair set off to face the games ahead. This time, however, with the creators' special attention.
Or: an unlikely second-chance alliance between a hearts-player with the best intentions, and a diamonds-player with the worst ones.
