“The auction,” Santos said. “To bid on Dr. Abbot.”
Dana studied them for a moment. “And why would you do that?”
“It’s for Dr. Robby.”

Jack fell for Robby the first time he saw him, the first time he found himself under the gaze of those soft brown puppy eyes. Right then, he knew he was gone for. But alas, it seems that Robby is ready to reject him at every turn. Unless…
“Hey, Jack?”
“Hm?” Jack turned his head to look at him.
Robby could hear his heart beating loudly into his ears. He could still backpedal, say anything else. Or he could take the risk.

The grass was still dewy, as Jack walked across it.
It caught, ever so lightly on his shoes, soaking the ends of his boots and darkening the already stained fabric. Jack had had these things for years, and they still didn't fall apart. Technically, they were hiking boots. He wore them because they never lost traction on linoleum, no matter how much blood there was.
"Hey, Robby."
The dirt did not respond. He spoke to it just the same.

Robby shifts his head on Jack's shoulder, snuggling closer. He lets his hand rest over the dog tags, on Jack's chest, over Jack's heart.
(If Robby had asked him to stay, Jack would have stayed. Even with the financial struggles. Even if he couldn't afford med school without the army paying for it. He would have said okay, kissed Robby, and figured out something else.
But Robby didn't ask.)
