“P-Please,” she whispered as softly as she could, a faint worry of triggering something dangerous by anything louder seizing her throat, “Make the end swift. Even if I do not live up to what you were hoping for, what you had demanded, I wish to not suffer, if only in death.”
She could not be certain if her words were even understood, if her tongue was shared by whatever now stood behind her. She could only hope the plea in her voice was relayed.
There was that dense silence once again in the woods around them, her stuttering breath and pounding heart the only sounds in her ears. She clenched her eyes shut tighter, waiting her demise.
