It’s still cold today when Katniss rings my bell, rocking between her heels and her toes, as if to check for Peacekeeper activity. Not that it matters; they’ll buy the strawberries off her too. But I don’t want to miss out on the purchase, so I grab a bundle of cash from my father’s desk and make my way down, squeezing my way through the front door to meet my friend.
Her nose is a little pink with cold. Her braid’s grown long enough that it brushes the lower half of her shoulder blades. She’ll probably need a trim soon. I wonder if she’d let me do it for her, or if she does it herself with a hunting knife in her bathroom mirror. I think about that more than I really should. If I ever offer, I’d better try not to let on about it.
“It’s freezing out here,” I huff, rubbing my arms. “Do you want to come in?”
“Is your dad here?” Katniss asks.
