The Nice Guys are handling what should be a low-stakes stalking case. Something to break up the monotony of cheating husbands and missing cats. But Healy is distracted, complacent in the coziness of the March household. March is injured, and increasingly irritated with his partner. They don't realize they're in over their heads, until it's too late.
“Man,” March was already holding another cigarette, probably his fifth this morning. “She was easy on the eyes. Not that stalking is ever okay...but I’m just saying, if we had to tail her on an investigation, it wouldn’t be a chore.” He blew out the smoke.

Summary
It was hard to gander how long Grace was on Erid when Simon came along. He could try measuring it out using the Earth’s Gregorian calendar like he did on the Hail Mary, but that’s when he still had a “lights out” timer and didn’t live on a planet with a very different yearly calendar. Teaching little eridians has forced him to adapt to their schedule more than his.
Where was he going with this?
Right! Simon.
He still hadn’t met him yet.
Or Rocky and other eridians find a wormhole and then an injured human man! They bring him to Erid and quarantine him to get him nice and healthy, but slowly find out he’s much different than their beloved science teacher.

Summary
Ryland doesn't know where he is, what he's doing, or why he's doing it. All he knows is that he's in a universe with no stars and that an organization called the COI found the Hail Mary spinning out into deep space. He knows that Rocky may be injured somewhere, and he knows that the man that currently lays in a hospital bed in front of him should be dead as dirt but has miraculously survived.
