Take Jim Kirk, enlisting on a dare, or Leonard McCoy, enlisting because of a divorce, as prime examples. Prime examples of turning to Starfleet for less than admirable reasons.
But for Alice, Starfleet is the first step towards normalcy; something that has been absent all her life.

‘Volt stares at Eddie for a while longer. Eddie keeps fighting the urge to stand and run, unable to handle this honesty. Volt brings out something in him that he doesn’t think he can unpack, quite yet.
Volt places his own warm, broad hand on top of Eddie’s. His fingers curl around it, and Eddie feels them trembling slightly.
“Thank you,” Volt whispers, his voice hoarse.
Then the dam breaks.
Tears stream down Volt’s face, silently at first but then punctuated by soft sounds that sound like stifled hiccups.’

Summary
Eddie knows he’s taking on too much, but breaks aren’t an option when the entire house depends on him, when compromising might mean losing Volt, and being alone again. So, he keeps going, pushing himself, and hiding his exhaustion from his lover, convincing himself that he only needs a little more time to make everything stable.
Then he meets the human, and as Eddie’s feelings for him grow, he is forced to face the truth about himself, and consider the only solution he has left. He will have to find it in himself to risk the leap, and trust that there will be someone there to catch him after all.

Summary
The heavy smell of ozone permeates the air, and Eddie can feel it here in the darkness: lightning struck the house. He starts to panic, starts to anticipate the pain and the draining feeling of a full outage. It’s been years since he’s had to go through one. It occurs to him a moment later through the haze that the last time one happened, Volt wasn’t around yet.
Volt. He has to find Volt.
The pain he was expecting doesn’t come. In fact, their connection starts to pulse and ebb under his skin and Eddie almost wants to scratch at himself. He feels jittery. He feels hot. The lights click back on, and they’re brighter than they have been in weeks, droning with overwhelming power.
Eddie tries to find Volt in the crowd of confused and worried patrons, and he hears two light bulbs pop in quick succession. He looks over in the direction of the sound, near the stairs to their loft apartment, and sees Volt down on his knees, one fist bracing himself against the wall and the other wrapped tightly around his own torso. He’s trembling and panting and blushing cyan down to the collar of his shirt.
