    When he wakes in the stinking elevator, the first thing he feels is confusion. How’d I get here? Then, he feels the panic. It’s cold, and dark, and so very cramped. His hand slips into something that smells like metal and that he vaguely thinks could be blood.

    He stands shakily, hands trembling their way into fists at his side. His eyes dart around the box, noting the crates and piles of fabric from broken ones.

    “Help,” he shouts, “Let me out of here!”

    He can't move around very much because of how small the box is, but the tilting and swaying it does is more than enough to make him crash into boxes and collect bruises. It feels like forever, had actually only been half an hour, but the elevator snaps into place at a stop and he crashes into the ground again.

    “Shit!” Sunlight slips in as the doors above him slide open with a squeal of metal on metal.

    “This is scarier than I thought it’d be,” Thomas murmurs.
    “It’s the Hunger Games,” Newt says quietly. “I don’t know what you imagined this would be, love. Hugs and kisses?”

    “They want us to take in a hybrid?”

    Scar doesn’t even try to hide the surprise and confusion in his words. Staring at Cub with both eyebrows raised to his hairline.

    “I thought hybrid zoos were deemed too dangerous for the public.” Scar waves a hand over in the vague direction of the zoo exhibits they do have. “Not to mention we were never intended to be that kind of zoo, why us?”

    Scar was just a humble zookeeper, he wasn't prepared to deal with this pesky bird that seems much more intelligent than everyone says he should be, but he isn't one to turn down an animal in need. Grian is just happy to be somewhere where he can lay on something soft, even if the humans are weird at this facility. Especially that scarred one.

    Xelqua had been born an avian, bearing six wings instead of the common two or four. The extra appendages corresponded to his heightened magic affinity, he'd come to theorize.

    The two new pairs of wings certainly did.

    He was able to do things now, things not any Avian should have been able to do. He could corrupt electrical systems with a thought, could phase through objects like a Vex. His wounds seemed to heal over in a matter of hours. It made escaping police custody a rather simple task.

    Once at a safe distance, Xelqua tucked his wings away with his regular magic. The four extras went away with them; as did his peculiar new powers.

    He staggered the streets until he found where the earth tipped downwards, falling to the musky streets of the Perimeter. Dazed, alone, free.

    The only evidence now left of the ceremony were his missing eyes.
