Summary
In a respectable town such as Highbury, one generally did not speak so overtly of designations. It was a truth acknowledged—for how else could advantageous matches be made—but not often spoken plainly in polite conversation. It was a delicate balance, to be sure, and perhaps in a bustling city like London or other such indiscrete locales, designations were easily bandied about. But Highbury was a conventional place with people who both were and were not open about such matters. Perhaps such may be said amongst those of close acquaintance. But in certain mouths, it made for idle gossip.
