In this low light, he can see the way the bandages wrap around Cheng Xiaoshi’s torso, visible above the hospital-thin blanket that Cheng Xiaoshi has, characteristically, already half-kicked off.
Lu Guang’s eyes track the rise and fall of his chest. Up, down. Up, down.
He keeps doing this. He cannot seem to stop.

Cheng Xiaoshi pulls it out from under Lu Guang’s arm—and the number on the little screen sits there, blinking, absolutely unreasonable: 39.8°C.
“Okay,” Cheng Xiaoshi says, to no one. The apartment is quiet except for the low, wet sound of Lu Guang breathing through his mouth. “Okay. That’s fine. That’s completely fine.”
It is not fine.
Or: In which Lu Guang gets sick and Cheng Xiaoshi discovers that taking care of someone and loving them are, in the end, exactly the same verb.
