She imagined herself as a flower, twisted and ingrown, ugly, petals crinkled and cracked with wear and tear, stem bent at the middle. Trampled on, too small and unsightly to be plucked. Wait for it to grow, a noiseless voice appeared in her head. Then you can pick it. Then you can rip it from the ground and twist its petals off, plop it into a vase and watch it die slowly. Beautiful.
