Derek has had thirty wonderful years with Avery. Even with Hastur inside his mind, he's grateful for all the years that he logically should not have lived to see. He's experienced so much beyond his infinite knowledge; he has been loved and has never been alone.
And then, as Hastur's final pawn comes into play, Derek's luck runs out.
As Avery repeats the word until it becomes an indistinguishable mumble, Derek places an arm under his shoulders and lifts him slightly off the floor. Resting his palm over Avery’s heart, he traces slow, intentional circles, guiding him into breathing deeply and regularly. “That’s it,” he soothes, “I’m here. You’re okay.”
Eventually, Avery raises his hand to touch Derek’s face, asking, “Is this real?”
“I promise,” Derek reassures. “It’s real.”

Fuck. None of this means anything at all, does it? It’s all just a stupid game – and maybe it briefly meant something, but all purpose died alongside Derek. Avery doesn’t understand why he’s the one left behind. There’s no reason to it, absolutely no sense in the fact that the world decided to take someone who could do so much and save someone who will do so little. In gaining infinite knowledge, did Derek see that, too? How could he have been confronted with the sheer pointlessness of Avery’s entire life and choose to save him anyway?
Or - the only place that Avery can mourn Derek is in the Minecraft world that used to belong to him.
