    Summary

It's 1965. Niki Lauda has been shipped off to an English boarding school in disgrace. He hates everything about Lightfell College except his best friend Marlene, and the secret underground races he sneaks out to every weekend.

But he hates super-popular jock sixth-former James Hunt the most.
    __

James Hunt knows that the future his family want for him - medical school, marriage, suburbia - is hurtling towards him, in spite of his own desires. He wants to race. He wants things he's too scared to even name.

And he wants to never see geeky new boy Niki Lauda ever again.

Stunning, just stunning and heartbreaking writing. You really feel the story alongside the characters. I have reread twice now, I think. Pure quality.

    Summary

To the outside world, Queen Anne - and all about her - seems to be a fading star in the night skies: she has lost the heir to the throne, and her King is courting one of her own ladies in waiting. It is not so much a case of if she falls - but when.

But then, a shocking turn of events leaves her a widow - and the mother of a Queen less than three years old. With few friends, and many enemies, she must turn to a man that she despises in order to survive, and hold a Kingdom together for England's first true Queen Regnant.

Absolutely fantastic writing, so engrossing as a story, realistic, engaging, literally checks all of my historical fiction boxes! Highly recommend, even if you have never watched the Tudors, like me.

    Summary

"When I first looked on her and perceived her unhappiness, it seemed to me that I saw a white flower standing straight and proud, shapely as a lily, and yet knew that it was hard, as if wrought by elf-wrights out of steel. Or was it, maybe, a frost that had turned its sap to ice, and so it stood, bitter-sweet, still fair to see, but stricken, soon to fall and die? " (Return of the King : The Houses of Healing).

Eowyn and Faramir's meeting and courtship in the Houses of Healing, and their relationship up to their marriage and arrival in Ithilien. Starts mainly bookverse, with occasional movie-verse references, then goes off into the post-war world. Now complete.

Wonderfully realistic portrayal of the horrors and after-effects of war, as well as beautiful characterisation of Eowyn as a woman who knows battle and strives to take her place in Middle Earth not just as a woman, but as a person same as any man.

As the train takes me further away from Toshio, from the farm, the fields and the hayrides, the cucumbers cooling in a basket in the stream, I grow numb and cold inside despite the heat.

So cute. Perfect thing to read after crying at the ending of Only Yesterday for the tenth time over.
