“And here I was about to suggest we join hands as man and wife,” Jaime drawled. “But by all means, let us continue to live in sin.”
The wench flinched. “Do you mock me? Or yourself?”
“No mockery. I’ve been thinking about the story we should tell to avoid notice. Two men and a lady of no relation… it invites talk.” He tsked and shook his head. “But a married couple and a brother traveling with them… why that’s as dull as can be.”
She looked at him, finally. Warily. “I suppose I’d have to strike off your chains and give you my sword, then? Do you think me stupid?”
Jaime shook his head, swallowing the obvious retort. “Such a mistrustful wench. The chains, yes, unless you want other memorable talk. The sword… why that must stay with you. My knightly lord husband to be, while I play the blushing bride.”

Brienne struggled into a robe and unbarred the door. She kept her blade at the ready. “You,” she said.
“You’re an impressive sight.” His green eyes laughed at her. “What are you doing with that sword?”
She raised it. “I have nothing to say to you.”
“Yes, I can see that our marriage would have been one long feast of reason and flow of soul.”
“Why are you here?”
He shouldered past her, disregarding her objections and her weapon, carrying a platter and a pitcher. Over his shoulder she could see guards. “Isn’t it regarded as a blessing to visit the mad?”
