Spencer isn't sure he ever really knew a time before wanting to die.
Logically he knows there must have been. Children aren't inherently born with that desire. But he can't pinpoint a specific moment where he became aware of it. Where he didn't have the List.
Now it's simply a fact of life. Get up. Go to work. Come home. Consult the List, the Pros and Cons of continued existence. Make coffee. Have dinner. Sleep.
Spencer had always found just enough reasons to keep living, tenuous though they were at times. Then Emily dies.

Summary
Spencer Reid knows Derek Morgan.
He knows the simple things. Things like Morgan’s soft spot for dogs, the diameter of his smile, his habit of Golden Girls running in the background after hard cases. He knows what car Morgan drives, that he’s a night owl, his average heart rate (57), each piece of the everyday idiosyncratic array that makes up the man.
Then Spencer knows the deeper things. The things that make up parts of Morgan that he doesn’t want to define him. The things that define him anyway.
Spencer Reid knows Derek Morgan.
Which is why, as Spencer watches darkness encroaching upon the sky from underneath, he cannot understand what he’s done wrong.

Gil didn't know what to do. Everything was wrong, leaving him caught in a state with not enough air and too many questions. As Gil took another shallow breath, trying to gather his racing thoughts, Macolm sniffled again, reaching up with one hand to wipe his nose with his sleeve. The action pushed the sleeve of his robe back just enough to reveal the small mark on the kid's wrist.

And suddenly, all the pieces clicked into place.

A rewrite of the events that take place directly after Martin’s arrest, set in a Soulmate AU. Gil finds Malcolm after Martin is taken away, wanting to thank the kid for saving his life. But when Malcolm breaks down, Gil makes an unexpected discovery.
