"Pretty sure of yourself," you manage, and your voice comes out slightly breathier than you intended.
"Haven't been proven wrong yet." She tilts her head, studying you with an intensity that makes your skin feel too warm. One corner of her mouth quirks up. "Had a girl last month, this gorgeous thing—lawyer, real buttoned-up type—let me tie her to my headboard and didn't leave for two days." She says it like it's a point of pride.
Jesus Christ. You shift your weight, pressing your thighs together, hoping she doesn't notice. Pretty sure she does notice, based on the way her eyes gleam.
"That supposed to impress me?" you ask, going for unaffected and landing somewhere closer to breathless.
"Is it working?" Stan's smile is pure sin now, all teeth and trouble and absolute certainty. She knows it's working. She can probably read it all over your face.

Fiddleford opens the cabinet above Stan's head. They look at the bottle on the second shelf — not the stuff they normally reach for but the genuinely good stuff, the bottle that's been up there so long neither of them can remember who bought it or why they kept saving it.

It's been almost thirty years since Shifty crawled out of the lab like a zombie rising from the grave, since Stanford Pines fell beyond their reach. Thirty years of almost nightly work on a portal that refused to obey their and Stan's commands, no matter what they did. Thirty years since the start of the Mystery Shack and Shifty's alter ego, the unlikeable co-manager of said Shack. Hope is starting to wear thin, and frustration is running high.
