    “Sorry, Yoshiki,” Hikaru groans as tears come out of one eye and more of him comes out of the other. “Ughh, I don’t – ”

    Yoshiki can see how hard he’s trying to calm himself down, but it just isn’t working.

    “It’s ok,” Yoshiki says, quiet. “It’s ok. Instead of shovin’ it back inside completely, can you try just...lettin’ it out? Just a little bit?”

    He has no clue how any of this works, but maybe a half-measure is better than trying to force it all at once.

    “Okay,” Hikaru says, but it sounds like a sob. More of the unknowable, incomprehensible swirl leaks out into the dark room.

    “Yoshiki – shit – ‘m sorry but can I…” Hikaru’s face – what’s visible behind the bloom of him – twists in a small kind of agony. “Can I touch you? Not much. Just – ”

    It's been years since Hikaru first took the body of Yoshiki's dead best friend. Despite everything - every horror and hurt - they managed to find a home in each other. Not quite friends or family. More and not. What they have is complicated, but precious.

    But when Yoshiki escapes their small town – to college, to Tokyo – Hikaru follows. And things start to change for them both.

    After making it to Jin Lan City to aid his martial brothers in curing a strange plague, Shen Qingqiu stumbles his way directly into a curse of his own. The fates have chosen a life to tie to Shen Qingqiu’s own—and of course it would be tied to the early arriving protagonist! As the curse worsens, Shen Qingqiu finds that distance between him and Luo Binghe begins to freeze him slowly. Literally freeze, he is at risk for hypothermia for not being right next to the guy who probably wants to turn him into a stick!

    Wait—what do you mean Shen Qingqiu will also lose the ability to lie!? That's an integral part of him not being unceremoniously sent back to the life where he’s already dead!

    [Initiating punishment protocol.]

    Wait wait wait wait. 

    What!? 

    Where is this coming from??

    What did he do, System!? Lying in bed like a lump on a log, not moving or speaking as he tries and fails to drift to sleep, what could he conceivably be doing that would merit a punishment!? And where do you get off, barging in to dole out reprimands out of nowhere when you’ve been radio silent for the last few years! Is the plot over or isn’t it???

    “Mn.” Plastered to his side like sticky rice as per usual, a needy arm curled around his waist to keep him close and make sure that he can’t wander off without waking him, Luo Binghe stirs slightly as Shen Qingqiu stiffens with rage. “Husband…?” 

    Shen Qingqiu opens his mouth to reassure him, but his voice completely refuses to leave his throat. And that’s when it appears. 

    1. “Get off, you’re suffocating me.” (Coldly push him away.) 
    2. “Husband, I’m feeling a little restless~” (Turn into him seductively.) 
    3. “It’s nothing, just a bad dream.”

    The System gets inventive, and Shen Qingqiu has to work with limited options.

    “Let’s never try that again,” Shen Qingqiu says in the panting, sweaty silence of their afterglow. It just slips out of his mouth without him thinking about it. 

    Luo Binghe twitches like a fish on a hook next to him, his head whipping around to the side. “Shizun!?” 

    He sounds shocked - completely taken off guard, like he hadn’t been expecting or thinking the same thing at all. What, hadn’t he hated it? He must have! 

    “It… didn’t feel right,” Shen Qingqiu says, looking over towards Luo Binghe. “Right?” 

    Luo Binghe looks back at him with wide, wounded eyes. Naked, with his hair tumbled all around him and a fine sheen of sweat on his skin, he looks like the picture of satisfied masculinity, except for what they’d been doing only minutes ago still haunting Shen Qingqiu’s mind’s eye. Luo Binghe, moaning and whimpering underneath him, his legs spread open like a wanton maiden’s-- 

    “What didn’t feel right about it?” Luo Binghe asks.
