Summary
In an effort to close the Master Gate that’s tearing Hawkins apart, Eleven makes a deal with the Mind Flayer: the Hive will contain the threat of Henry's power as long as people stay out of the Upside Down. Interests mutual for once, they work together to seal the gates for good—but in His final act of infuriated defeat, Henry captures Mike as the barrier between worlds closes, never to reopen.
Will is the only one around when Mike is taken. He’s the only one who believes Mike is still alive, stuck in Henry’s clutches and in desperate need of a rescue.
When Eleven and the others refuse to break the world-saving truce without proof that it won’t be a wasted effort with disastrous consequences, Will is left trying to find answers (and Mike) on his own.

"Sorry, I just– you're alive," he states again, breathlessly.
"I'm... I'm not alive."
Mike freezes, stunned. "What? Will, what does that mean?"

A week ago, William Byers went missing. 24 hours ago, Mike's mother told him they found his body. But right now, at 10pm on the road to his best friend's house, Will is standing there, in the same clothes Mike last saw in him. Right there, his Will, talking to him and hugging him even when his funeral is in four days.

And Will’s not the writer here, Mike is, but he has no idea what goes on inside Mike’s head anymore, because Mike doesn’t let anybody in. He’s become all but a total recluse — reticent, he just buries his head in books and hunches over his typewriter for hours on end, writing stories nobody’s been allowed to read for months and getting lost in made-up paracosms to fulfill the gaping hole that El has left in his life — in their lives.
But it’s not fair, because act as he might, Mike wasn’t the only one who lost El.

Mike is drunk.
Not ceiling-is-spinning, need-to-be-dragged-home drunk.
He is horrifically, truthfully, unable to keep his goddamn mouth shut drunk.
Will’s mouth is open by the time Mike is done ranting, pink lips parted in surprise. “Um. Wow. I- I hadn’t realized it had this much of an effect on you, Mike.”
Mike huffs, crossing his arms. “I- I’m drunk.”Or, as stated in a TikTok I saw the other day, "Dustin, Lucas, and Will absolutely went to that fucking party after they went to Mike's."
