Jonathan can usually smell Argyle’s van before he sees it. He thinks he could probably follow the scent of pizza, weed and diesel fuel even if he were blindfolded. He knocks on the window once to announce his presence, then heaves open the sliding door of Argyle’s van to reveal the man himself, lounging on the backseat and already a few tokes into his regular 4:20 joint.
“That shit’ll fry your brain, man,” Jonathan comments in lieu of a real greeting. Argyle just grins, big and easy.
“Sunny side up, dude,” Argyle says. It almost makes sense.

"It’s Will," Lucas said, and the two words fell like slabs of cement into the pool of silence.
Will. The panic buried deep inside Mike resurfaced. His mind immediately jumped to the most familiar danger: Vecna? The Upside Down? No, it couldn’t be. She was gone. Jane… El had ended it all almost four years ago. The other side was sealed. That was no longer a possibility. But Mike’s heart wouldn’t listen to reason. It pounded against his ribs, thump-thump, thump-thump, a primal rhythm of terror.
"Did Vecna come back?" he asked, his voice sounding ridiculously small.
"No," Lucas’s voice was a thread. "AIDS."

“Hey, baby,” a voice says easily, not looking up. “You want coffee—?”
Carlton turns around, stops short. Blinks once.
“Oh,” he says, then laughs under his breath. “You’re… not Will.”
Mike freezes.

Post-canon, Mike Wheeler crashes at his best friend’s New York apartment for a book deal. But he wasn't ready to see this version of Will Byers: confident, successful, in love, surrounded by community and so, so free.
While Will lives the life he has always deserved, Mike grieves El and comes to the quiet, devastating realization that he might be in love a few years too late.
Despite everything, they still seem to find their way back to each other.
