"I can fix this," Avery's word shook, he was taking a few steps back, both hands up slightly. He was hesitant, he did not know what he was doing, but all Derek knew was that Avery was just so selfless it hurts.
"I can fix this."
Derek sees one single timeline.
He's too late.

In which Derek gets out alive, losing his infinite knowledge, but at a cost. Avery, in his mind, battles against the king to take control of his mind back. His physical body is left to act as a vessel waiting for its host.
Derek must find a way to bring Avery back.

D3rLord3 is forced to take Avery to Carcosa where he tries his best to commit to two goals: (1) keep Avery's blindfold on, or make sure he doesn't see anything; and (2) get Avery to safety.
He succeeds on one of these things.

Avery’s head whips up so fast he nearly gets whiplash and stares up at the coffee shop TV tuned to the local news.
“ーafter two days of no contact and multiple missed calls. This comes in light of some recent surveillance footage discovered by investigators which shows men in black arriving at Derek’s home in unlisted vehicles and carrying out a body, whom Derek’s mother has identified as her son. The identities of these men have not yet been determined. Police are urging anyone with information related to the case or Derek’s whereabouts to come forward."
Or: the soul remembers what the mind's forgotten, Derek is alive, the government is up to no good, and Avery really, really isn't prepared to deal with any of that

A part of him was scared. Is scared. He could live a life beyond this. Could live a life forgetting Derek, a stranger he’s searched for longer than he’d even come to know. It would be easy, to forget. It would be simpler.
But simple is New Year’s Eve spent alone at home playing Minecraft off a laptop he’d picked up in a locker he was never meant to pry open. Simple is watching hours worth of video content, of the gameplay of a man solving puzzles in a seemingly impossible situation on that sandbox game. Simple is being alone.
Derek was always meant to reach Avery, and Avery was meant to be reached.
This time, Avery means to do the opposite.
