"He was older than me by at least ten years, a pretty lady with an eyepatch, and I’d definitely never seen him before. That was interesting; usually hallucinations plucked a lot of their contents from things you’d actually seen and then just added a lot of special effects, stretching them, and shining them up and coating them with pixie dust, but I’d remember him, even if I’d only seen them in passing. Their remaining eye met mine for barely an instant, but there was a lot going on there – pity, distrust, and a queasy something that might’ve been jealousy? For some reason? – before sliding to the seat beside me.
I followed the stranger’s gaze to the seat next to me and moving my head felt weird. There wasn’t any motion blur like with some drugs, but the muscles in my neck felt weak. Before I could give much thought to how difficult it was hold up the weight of my head, my eyes landed on him.
Petya. It had to be Petya – it could hardly be anyone else, there was only one person with eyes like that in the entire universe – but... the hair on the back of my neck prickled.
