“And you are–,” Armand pauses, as though searching for words. Finally settles on… “Safe.”
The implications in that one word. Daniel’s near certain the kid doesn’t mean safe as in a safe bet, a sure thing. He means that he feels safe. And the fact that the kid is finding safety here of all places– in an old journalist’s arms, in his own professor’s bed, without any defined relationship. Is he speaking about emotional safety? Or is he speaking about physical safety?
Daniel’s afraid it’s the latter.

“You doing all right?” Daniel asks him.
Armand blinks. “No,” he says.
“Most honest you've been with me since I got here,” Daniel says. And then, because it seems like the thing to do, “I can clear out, if you need the place to yourself.”
“Whatever you prefer.” Armand's lips look chapped. Dehydration? He ate the kid with the sunglasses, but the smear he left took a lot of bleach to scrub away. Maybe Daniel should - “You won't be harmed,” Armand says, “regardless of your decision.”
“You got served divorce papers so hard it left a crater,” Daniel says, “and you're still poking around in people's heads.”

Daniel’s biggest complaint with his turning, and he has quite a few complaints, is the age that he’d finally been gifted immortality. He’ll forever be stuck on the verge of his seventies, body molded in age, something that sticks in his mind every time Lestat — gorgeous, adonis, Lestat — calls him beautiful. Louis had said it too, just once, called him a beautiful boy when he’d been filled with fresh blood after teaching him to hunt, and it stuck in his mind then too. He’s not beautiful, not in the way he thinks he should be — the way a vampire ought to be.
“But you are,” the vampire in his lap speaks, picking through his mind so easily. Daniel could put up a mind shield, if he truly cared. He didn’t. “So few of us get to experience what you did, to age and wear that age. It suits you.”

“You know what I think?” Daniel begins, and Armand responds by way of an indulgent flick of his wrist, a raise of his eyebrows. “I think you weren’t just bored but jealous. Jealous of Louis’s attention, maybe mine too. And you couldn’t resist having a little bit of that attention on you. And then there was the chance to observe a real life human specimen in the flesh, tap on the glass and see what I do. I don’t think you could resist it.”
Mid-Dubai, Daniel is tired, frustrated and generally sick of Armand’s bullshit. He has some things to get off his chest.
I wanted to take Daniel's canon compliant 'splinter of coldness' out for a ride.
