After Paris, Ava Daniels has resigned herself to being Deborah's platonic, live-in life partner. (She's aware that it's not exactly the picture of a normal friendship.) It's enough, she tells herself, it has to be. Deb's straight, she'll never feel the same way, what they have is still profound and life-changing.
And then she gets an invitation in the mail. Apparently, her mother's getting remarried. To Jack? (The windsurfer? Really?)
Waltham sucks, going home is always complicated and messy, and so, despite knowing how terrible of an idea it is to bring along the straight woman she's kind of completely in love with, Ava agrees to take Deborah as her plus one. Weddings are, after all, notoriously good places to avoid thinking about romance, right?

"Ri-" She stops. If this is someone close enough to leave fliers in her friends bar regularly, it's someone who might know her name. It's not exactly common. "River."
"Bullshit." The voice on the other end sounds amused. Rio can hear the smile in it.
"Well Jolene isn't your real name either, is it?" Rio fires back.
"Baby, I'm doing sex work. I need the name to protect my identity, but you don't have to hide from me."
"I could say the same to you."
"With all due respect, I didn't call you up for phone-sex did I?"
Touché.
Rio is absolutely furious when her girlfriend tells her she's breaking things off, partially due to the fact she's too quiet in bed. Hoping to get comfortable with dirty talk, she takes her friend's advice to call up a sex hotline to practice on a stranger.
It takes her far too long to realise that the woman she's having casual phone-sex with is none other than her best friend of ten years.

Ava’s fingers fly to her mouth, evidence of her recent activity visible on her lips, cheeks flush to match the color of her shirt. She rubs it a little.“Yeah, we uh..” Ava begins. “Made out a little.”
“You missed a spot.”
Deborah takes a step forward, and Ava’s green apple perfume mixed with the remainders of her guest room soap fills her nostrils. Ava closes her eyes as Deborah’s fingers stretch to lightly brush her lips.
Her lip is plump under her thumb like a ripe cherry. If she presses harder the skin might break, leaking its juices over her fingers. She’s almost tempted to press and see what hides under the surface.

Rio looks at her, puzzled. Her eyes dart back and forth between Agatha’s.
“You remember?” Rio asks carefully.
Holy shit. She’s engaged to Rio.

Her heart feels like it’s about to give out and that burning in her ribs feels like fire.
When did this happen?
“Not really but I guess it makes sense.” She’s barely able to hear the words leave her mouth over the beating of her own heart.
“So you remember Wanda?” Rio asks dejectedly. Agatha frowns, confused all over again.
“Wanda?” She repeats. “Who’s Wanda?”

Agatha wakes up in hospital with amnesia after a car accident and immediately jumps to the very logical but extremely wrong conclusion about her best friend. As she tries to piece together her life with memories of Rio and no one else, she’s forced to ask herself an important question: Why did she agree to marry the wrong person?
