    The meaning was clear: You allowed this.

    Vanessa didn’t allow anything. Lucy did what she wanted, and in the end all her pushing only pushed her away. However, in her mother’s view it’s clear who’s to blame here, and it’s not her granddaughter because: Parents guide their children.

    And Vanessa didn’t.

    “Call her,” she said as she indicated for Vanessa to refill her tea, and she did, later in the car, because it is hard to tell her mother no. But the call went straight to voicemail, and she left it at that; she didn’t know what to say anyway. She later found out second-hand how Lucy was doing—from her sister and, ironically, her mother.

    Now she can’t call, even though she did, irrationally, right after hanging up, the words ping-ponging around in her brain: “Your daughter has gone missing. It’s very likely she and her boyfriend have been abducted.”

    I have been obsessively reading the fantastic Kel/Dom series “World Enough, and Time” by Lelarin, and I highly, highly recommend you check it out!

    I was wishing for a scene that shows Dom falling for Kel, and as Lelarin has already provided me with so much reading joy I felt guilty begging for more… so I wrote it. These versions of Kel and Dom are definitely inspired by Lelarin’s, who writes them with incredible canonical accuracy.
