Summary
He didn’t know what she now looked like, but he could grasp small details based on the sounds she made as she landed. There was a familiar metallic rattle, louder and more intense than the sounds of Evbo’s feathers. He could hear the screech of talons against stone and feel the updraft caused by what he presumed to be wings. The sound, though, was more like the sound of leather than Evbo’s own near-silent flights.
The beast gave off heat, a mirror of the very desert it spawned from. If Evbo was any normal player, he probably would’ve been absolutely terrified.
Instead, he brought in a shaky breath and turned to face her.Evbo and Tabi speak for the last time.

He heard Evbo humming next to him; a song that Boey had heard him sing before, actually. He didn't know all the lyrics, but he knew some of them. Subconsciously, when a part came up that he knew, he would open his mouth and quietly sing along.
It wasn't on purpose. It was simply the result of a lesson going rusty. A rusty door with hinges that screeched every time it was opened, finally breaking open and exposing the thing inside. He didn't even think anything of it.
Not until Evbo stopped humming for a moment to casually comment- "You know, you have a nice voice. I don't think I've ever heard you sing before."Why Boey doesn't sing anymore.

Evbo's broken arm would throb in tune with his heart, and his empty stomach would growl and twist and eat itself alive with its own acid, and he would curl into himself like the small child he was and squeeze his eyes shut as if it might hide him from the world. He would bury his face in his worn, thin pillow, shivering beneath the sheets that were far too thin to protect against the sharp chill of the stagnant air.
Distantly, maybe, he would recognize that he was ill, but illness was nothing but an annoyance. It wouldn't spare him.
Because despite being a child, a delicate fourteen years old, Evbo was a Noob. And that title defined him far more than his age ever would.When Evbo was a child, he had a dream.

They had a child of their own now. Boey should be happy for them. They had a little girl, a child of their own blood, one that didn’t have a million pieces to pick up after. She wasn’t damaged. She wasn’t broken. She wasn’t a project to be put back together.

Boey had no place in that story.

But Rocky uses another claw to grab a tissue and wipe at his skin. His touch is always surprisingly tender for being a rock.

“No,” Rocky says immediately, cutting him off. “Grace sick. Grace hurt. But Grace no die.”
Grace nods. “I wouldn’t have gotten through this without you.”
Rocky dabs the tears around his eyes away. “Rocky would not be here without Grace.”

Maybe the first time he meets them won’t be the last. Maybe the universe is telling him that he’ll have more time with his soulmate than he thinks.
Evbo takes a deep breath. “Whoever you are, I’m waiting. And I won’t lose you. I promise.”
