Summary
Rick has seen the looks. From Daryl and Michonne. From Glenn and Maggie, then Beth when she rejoined them. Even Carol took a second glance every now and then.
Something about Carl.
Something Rick knows stems from their month-long separation. Something that has to do with being a child taking care of a child, losing new people to a brutal attack (one that Rick isn't confident Carl got away from scot-free), and getting the closest thing to a haven ripped away.
All of those – and maybe more –, make Carl who he is now. Nearly the sole caretaker of Judith. Despondent and hypervigilant.
Different.
OR
Once they reunite after Terminus, everyone notices changes in Carl, though no one actually knows what happened.
Technically a sequel to The Modern Age, where Carl and Judith are alone after the prison falls. There will be context in the notes for anyone who will only read this fic!

Summary
Carl didn't look back.
He didn't look back at the thick smoke coming from the prison. At the horde surrounding his dad's body. At the destruction left behind by the Governor.
He left them behind.
It's likely the fatigue that makes him think this -- the fatigue and grief that's been building up since he watched Sophia walk out that barn. But the thoughts won't stop.
OR
Carl escapes the destruction of the prison with Judith. He needs to figure out how to keep himself and his baby sister alive when they've lost everything.
