“It’s okay,” Noelle whispered, brushing a piece of matted hair from her eyes. “I’ll take care of everything.”
She sat with her like that for a while. Just kneeling, watching her chest rise and fall. She looked gentler this way. All the tension gone from her face. Her teeth just slightly parted, her jaw slack, her whole frame folded up on itself like an exhausted animal in a den. Noelle couldn’t help it—she reached out and cupped her face in both hands, carefully, like she might wake if she wasn’t gentle.
“You’re so tired,” she murmured. “I know.”
