And if Avery was completely honest, there were moments where the surgeon frightened him, like when his eyes hit the light wrong or he bit his lip with teeth that looked a tad too sharp. No matter how many times he tried to convince himself he was hallucinating, that animal fear in the back of his mind spiked as though he was a rabbit in the presence of a wolf.
Frankly, there were days he found himself wondering if the man was actually one of his mother's ghosts.
Or, Jonathan returns home changed and Avery isn't sure who (or what) he is anymore.
