Valeriy huffs out a little laugh. Mitya is suffering. Mitya is going to die a hyperthermia induced death and Valeriy is laughing.

"I really didn't want you to worry too much," says Mitya to the replacement guard, before pulling out his notebook. "Anyways, as you can see here, I've made due progress in line with the time since my shift's started. You can see my all new notes and observations recorded here. If you want to check again to make sure I'm getting all my stuff done in a few hours, I'd be more than happy to show you!"
Hmm? That is… Entirely unlike any sort of behavior he's displayed with Valeriy. What of whining and pouting about how he doesn't want to go back to work? Sighing about how he's been caught? Trying to distract with a tangent about society that eventually spirals out of control into an independent ramble?
After taking a day off due to emotional tumult following the events at the theater, Valeriy finds his mind too preoccupied with his charge to truly enjoy the vacation. So, like any reasonable individual in his position, he pursues the only logical course of action: Observing Mitya from a distance.
Unbenownst to Valeriy, his all-consuming feelings are more than reciprocated.
