Summary
Ilya stood next to Svetlana, jaw tight, fists clenched ... helpless. He had failed to lead the Russian Olympic hockey team to victory and now his child, little Mishenka (Mikhail), would pay the price.
His father did not tolerate failure. The terms were stated explicitly. If he wanted to see his child, he had to win. His father had no mercy. Svetlana had made the mistake of going home to bear their son, a son who had been confiscated at birth and prevented from following his parents west, held hostage to ensure compliance. Now, Ilya's father would once again prevent him and Sveta from seeing their two year old son.
It was a devastating loss. After his father's cutting words ended, Ilya walked away. Sveta and he both found a separate quiet corner to grieve as they packed their bags and got on a plane. Watching Russia fall away from beneath the wheels of the jet, he did not allow himself to cry.

Shane habitually defied expectations. The Canadian Olympic hockey player surprised Russian Officials, survived a fire at sea, defied his mother, and found a whole new gear when he stole a small child with curly blond hair. Now he had to get the two of them out of Russia.

Oh. Well. That was pretty definitively a thing that people said about partners who were together romantically.
“Say something,” Buck instructed.
“What?”
“Anything,” Buck said, his voice wavering on the word. Which was—it was weird, right? Why was Buck so shaken by a throwaway comment?
Or maybe the better question was why wasn’t Eddie? If either of them was going to get freaked out by the assumption that he was dating a man, it would make more sense for it to be Eddie, who was straight, and not Buck, who had, in fact, already dated men.
“Aren’t you going to be late for your shift?”

When coming out to the Voyageurs leaves him wondering what his future in Montreal might look like, he lets himself be a little selfish, he lets himself wonder if there might be somewhere else he might be happy. If Montreal wants to get rid of a generational player, he's not about to stop them, especially if it means he can get a little closer to joy.

“We do not say anything about the Hollander situation,” LeClaire tells them even though it sounds like he’s already resigned to what he knows is going to happen.
After all, Roz gets extremely mad whenever it’s brought up. Not that Cliff can blame him, he’s pretty sure that Roz liked Hollander before this (wouldn’t chirp him half as much if he didn’t). Finding out that he’s such a bastard must sting.
Not to mention that Roz does not mess around with people that disrespect girls. Or women. Or kids. Or dogs. Or the elderly (excluding Scott Hunter). Or really anyone, if it’s for petty stupid reasons.
“Of course,” Cliff agrees for both of them since Roz is still too busy texting someone.
It’s apparently not good enough for LeClaire because he asks, “Roz?”
“Just one second,” he answers without raising his eyes from his phone or stopping his typing. “Need to get my Jane to agree with something. She’s very stubborn.”
Or. My take on the 'their text leak and now everybody thinks that Shane is an abusive bastard' premise. Featuring Ilya giving a presser, Marly realizing in real time who 'Jane' is and the internet reacting to the craziness.

The man handed it over eagerly and Shane took a deep breath, praying that this actually worked. The phone rang and rang before going to voicemail, but Shane relaxed when the familiar old voice confirmed it still belonged to the man he’d known as a kid. And Shane, eternal hater of asking for help, did his best to complete one of the most awkward tasks of his life.
“Hi Mr. Chabaud, this is Shane, David and Yuna’s boy. Um, this is going to sound strange, and trust me it’s a long story, but when you get this could you go across the street to my parents house and tell them the news is wrong and I’m not actually dead?”
Or
One earthquake, two lost phones, and many articles citing a mistranslated headline later and Shane needs to get a message home that he and Rose are alive. But he and Rose are millennials and whoops, they haven't had to memorize a phone number since they were kids.
