Dean was pretty sure that he'd die sooner rather than later in the hands of his own husband, Michael. A push, with a little more force, stronger than all the previous ones. Dean’s head would knock on the wall, his skull would fracture for the last time. He'd finally be free from his life.
Then Castiel came into his mess, with his sincere smiles and kind words.

“When Sammy got sick, I used to take him on rides like this,” Dean says. “Drive around town and stuff, so he wasn’t stuck inside.” Cas has that same posture, listing against the car door, curled in on himself like a little boy whose tummy hurts. He’s more human than humans sometimes. He’s never learned to hide his weaknesses.
Dean feels like he’s friends with a zoo animal, a tiger used to lying belly-up, and Dean thinks he ought to toughen him up, go for the gut and teach him a lesson, until Cas looks at him with that billion-yard stare and Dean remembers that he’s the biggest cat in the jungle. He’s almost afraid of him sometimes. That’s okay. Dean’s been afraid of his family his whole life.

He hides out in a coffee shop with his laptop, hoping to outrun the loneliness, just for a few hours. Instead, he runs into Castiel. Castiel, the quiet guy from high school who isn't supposed to recognize him.
Dean braces himself for awkward questions.
But Cas has something else entirely to say.
