Grace is sick with a fever. Stratt needs her lead scientist and right-hand man back yesterday.
He shivers nonstop, lean muscles clenched tight, breathing slowly in and out through his nose, eyes still closed. She positions the washcloth on the back of his neck, and he makes a noise deep in the back of his throat that zings through her like an electrical shock.
Eva is not the type of person who doubts herself. Her academic life and career path thus far had beaten that out of her. She makes decisions and moves forward with her life, never looking back, never second-guessing.
She is wondering now how good of an idea this was.

(At five fifty, he makes his way to the landing pad, and of course, she's already there, her back turned to him and her black coat blowing in the cold wind.
"Stratt," Grace greets her. "Do you ever—?"
Words die in his throat when she turns towards him, and he prays to a God he doesn't believe in that his face doesn't turn a bright shade of red.
Stratt, very uncharacteristically for her, is wearing a suit, or at least a pair of wide-legged black pants, a white shirt and — Jesus help him — a black tie, hanging loosely around her neck. Her hair is pulled back into a loose bun, and she looks — honestly, she looks… If she asked him to jump off a cliff right this second, he wouldn't need to be told twice.)

She doesn’t have much to go by, she’s never actually taken a pregnancy test before, but there’s no mistaking it for anything but what it is. Of course her first time would be now: at 43 years old and in the middle of trying to save humanity from extinction. Of course.

Stratt ducked her head for a moment, and Ryland felt his smile grow. That was a clear sign she was laughing— probably one of those huffy, sigh-laughs she did when he cracked a joke just dumb enough to get good reaction out of her.
"I decided to get some fresh air," she parroted, leaning down a bit more. "And I'm not, not looking for company, Dr. Grace."
