Irina waded out until she stood waist-deep in the lake, and then she looked down at her son. Ilya was half asleep, his eyes slitted, mouth open. The lanugo had fallen away, and his pale skin was dotted with dark moles, a negative image of stars scattered across a night sky. She kissed his forehead, running a finger along his chubby cheek, and he turned into her hand. The moment hung between them—perfect, still. The whole world around them seemed, for a moment, to stop turning, to hold its breath.
Irina looked up, inhaled and exhaled, and then threw him into the lake.
At first she could not bear to look—she closed her eyes when she let go of him—but only for a moment.
She opened her eyes, and smiled for the first time in five years.
